●『ゾンビの肖像』個展開催に添えて
東京六本木ミッドタウンの向かいにある小さなバーが、毎月最終日曜日にゾンビバーとなります。店のゾンビスタッフとほとんどの来場客が500円のメイクチャージを支払いゾンビと化して酒を酌み交わし、毎回異様な盛り上がりを見せています。
2013年の2月から11月まで、このゾンビバーでポートレート撮影を行いました。

ゾンビメイクを施された『普通の人々』が、まるで私が仕事で撮影している俳優やモデルのように堂々とレンズに飛び込んでくることに、とても感動しました。
この写真作品の裏テーマは『普通の人々』の肖像です。
写真には物理的な表層しか写りませんが、簡単なゾンビメークで覆い隠したはずの内面が逆効果と思える程に浮かび上がってくる不思議な肖像写真群になっています。
そしてこの写真達は、2013年に東京に存在した人間達の記録でもあります。
337枚の『普通の人々』の写真達に囲まれて、写真の持つ奇妙な力をより多くの方に感じて頂きたいと強く願っています。

20年にわたり人物写真で飯を食ってきた私でさえ、自分が撮った写真の塊を前にして言葉を失うこの感覚を是非とも味わって下さい。

●About “Portraits of Zombies”
There is a small bar in Roppongi, across from the Midtown complex, which on the last Sunday of every month turns into a Zombie Bar. The staff all become zombies and nearly all of the customers choose to pay the ¥500 make-up charge to be transformed into zombies. Every month is a completely different sort of happening as the staff and customers share drinks and the fun of being zombies.
From February to November 2013, I made photographic portraits in the Zombie Bar, using a Hasselblad H3DⅡ-39, 80 mm ring-flash and a white background. I was so impressed at how these ordinary people, all done up in zombie make up, lurched towards my lens as if they were professional actors and models. On the surface the theme of these photographs may seem to be Zombies,” but I would say that the deeper theme is actually “Ordinary People.”
A photograph can only capture the superficial physical layer. You would think that simple makeup would only further shroud the subjects, but somehow, strangely, the makeup seems to draw out the inner selves of the subjects in this oddly wonderful series of portraits. The photographs are also a record of people who were living in Tokyo in 2013.
My hope, in organizing this exhibition, is that as many people as possible will feel the strange power of the photograph while standing in a room surrounded by 337 photographs of these “Ordinary People.”
